Cittukali (chee-to-kali) is the Malayalam translation for ‘playing cards’. Inspired by the elegant form of the Malayalam numerical, this deck of cards is designed to bring light to this forgotten set of symbols. My cultural roots trace back to the state of Kerala, India where the local language spoken is Malayalam. As I'm not really well versed with reading and writing Malayalam, this personal project turned to be the perfect opportunity to build a beautiful relationship with this script and my creative process as a graphic designer. Each numbered card has a latin representation and is visually composed using the respective number of Malayalam symbols. For example four Malayalam number symbols in the 4 card, six Malayalam number symbols in the 6 card and so on for the whole deck of playing cards. To develop a way of seeing type as shapes and not only as symbols helped me appreciate the beauty of many vernacular scripts that exist in my country.
