Started as a personal project by Nina Sans and Rafa Goicoechea, 36 days of type is a celebration of type and creativity, involving designers, illustrators, type lovers and creatives from all around the globe. For my second year attempting the series I wanted to take a more illustrative route to the project. To add to the challenge I also decided to animate each design to add a layer of storytelling to the artwork. For this series I used a common character named ‘Leomes’ as moniker of myself and tried to represent each letter as a meaningful relationship I have with another person up until now. The project was eventually titled ’26 days of friends.’ I stuck with a surreal aesthetic for the character design and used the caption space on Instagram to depict an anecdote from that relationship. Creating animations for each of the artwork was challenging, however it strengthened my grasp on animation techniques and helped create an environment to support the character design. In this attempt of the challenge I choose to go with lowercase letters. I also added a constrain to maintain a gradual decrease in volume of the character design from the letter ‘A’ to ‘Z.’
